Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
